The NHLBI invites applications for research projects that will investigate the causes of and molecular pathways involved in acute exacerbations of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). Clinical and basic research supported through this program must seek new knowledge that may lead to the development of more effective approaches to the prevention and treatment of exacerbations in COPD. While the studies may be descriptive in part, all research projects supported through this RFA must include hypothesis-based, mechanistic investigations that lead toward the identification of molecular targets for therapeutic intervention.
